You can create quite a demo in a short period of time that’s fairly impressive with these AI tools. But a demo-grade agentic workflow is not the same as a production workflow.

You can create quite a demo in a short period of time that’s fairly impressive with these AI tools. But a demo-grade agentic workflow is not the same as a production workflow. A successful demo is not the finish line. Just because you can demonstrate happy-path features for an agentic workflow, it is no proof of a production agent. It is merely an acceptance gate to keep the project moving forward. And it proves that the happy path works. A successful demo does prove that the agent will run correctly in production. There’s demo-grade, and then there’s lawsuit-prevention, production-grade.

Deploying an agent to production or an agentic workflow to production can quickly turn into a legal liability if you don’t have strict controls and guardrails in place. This is not hypothetical either; there are real-world examples. In 2024, Air Canada had to pay a fee because an agentic workflow hallucinated a non-existent bereavement fare refund policy. A tribunal ordered the airline to pay the customer. The harness is the runtime that provides the guardrails for production reliability.

If you have an issue in production, it is often not that the model broke. It’s not that your prompts or your prompt engineering failed. If it misbehaves in production, don’t blame the model or the prompts. It’s almost certainly a harness problem. Remember, the model provides the absolute ceiling for what an agentic application can do. The agent harness determines if the model is able to reach that ceiling. Remember the ACI Princeton study where, with a fixed model, applying principles of harness engineering and context engineering improved the software issue resolution rate by 3.3 times without changing the underlying model. The harness is the bigger lever when fixing production issues and providing production guardrails.
